Great piece that Eddie... remember the Johnny Owen fight well... he took a hell of a beating... brave brave fella and a tragic end... back in 2006 we stayed in Merthyr for the cup final... the pub we stayed had a few ageing photo's up of Johnny O'... he had some family that used to still drink in there.. we raised a toast with a few of the locals later on in the evening...

Cheers for that Josh... great read whilst munching through my bowl of cheerios at work... still say the Rumble was without doubt the most spectacular sporting occasion ever... certain things stop the world... Moon landings... US presidents getting shot.... Live AID.... and Ali... memories as crisp as anything of waking up at silly o'clock with the old man to either watch or listen to the great man... they'll never be another like him

Had a great commanding voice and a presence about him

Most journos nowadays are spotty faced oiks, I do like Sam Wallace though, his brother is a West Ham season ticket holder so he'll do for me

There are a couple of books ...
McIlvanney on Football
McIlvanney on Boxing
which collect his writing and are worth checking out

Ali gave him a 3 hour interview after the Rumble In The Jungle and sure his article about the fight is online somewhere

A colossus of the sports journalist world. His narration on many a documentary was perfection.
